Happiness is a word as elusive as it is simple, yet it carries countless meanings, each shaped by our unique perspectives. For many, happiness is synonymous with abundance, but it is the context in which we seek this abundance that divides us.

In today's world, it often feels as though we are adrift in a dark abyss, our hearts burdened by growing hatred, envy, and a relentless drive to outdo one another. Every moment pushes us deeper into this shadowed chase for what we have come to define as success. We are guided by self-importance, fear, and the fragility of our own insecurities, shaping the world in ways that seem to drift further from the light.
In this ruthless pursuit, we trample over others, forsaking our duties and relationships, all in the name of sacrifice. But what is sacrifice if it serves only to fulfill our own desires? True sacrifice is an offering of love — a gift we give for the sake of those who hold our hearts. Yet, many have twisted its meaning to justify the abandonment of their roles as parents, children, partners, and friends.
It breaks my heart to witness this unending race towards a hollow success, one that often costs us the very things that truly matter — the quiet joys and subtle riches that make life worth living.
Throughout my own journey, I too have been guilty of overlooking the love and blessings that surround me, chasing after something elusive, believing it to be the true purpose of my life. It wasn’t until I found myself separated by oceans from my home and the life I thought I wanted that I truly understood. In that vast distance, I learned the priceless worth of what I already had: the love that anchors my soul, the relationships that give my life meaning. These are the treasures that truly drive me, the quiet wealth that enriches my days.
I often find myself sharing these lessons with my mother when we stand at the crossroads of life. I tell her, "We must learn to find happiness in what we have. Too often, we dwell on what we lack, on the misfortunes that cloud our lives. But when we pause to reflect on the good, we discover an abundance of blessings that life has mercifully bestowed upon us, especially when compared to the trials faced by those less fortunate."

One of the most beautiful and unforgettable memories I hold dear is of my mother sharing how she found happiness despite the hardships that life threw her way. She recounted two crucial turning points — moments she returns to when life’s weight grows too heavy.
She spoke of how married women, like herself, often complain about their countless duties — the early mornings spent preparing meals, the endless cycle of household chores, the care required for family, and the myriad of tasks that leave little room for rest. Yet, she recalled meeting a distant relative, an unmarried woman who had no family left, either through loss or distance. This woman’s life was a stark contrast, consisting of waking up, eating, and then simply waiting for the day to end — no tasks, no loved ones to care for, no responsibilities to fulfill.
Witnessing this, my mother realized how fortunate she truly was. The thought of living a life devoid of purpose, with no loved ones to cherish, filled her with profound sadness. For the first time, she felt deeply grateful for the very burdens she once resented. The weight of her responsibilities became a precious reminder of the love and connection she had in her life.
She learned to cherish even the most demanding days, knowing that the alternative — being alone and idle — would be far more unbearable, like a tree standing alone in a barren field, its branches heavy with the sorrow of isolation.
She also shared the story of another unfortunate soul, a family friend — whose life was shattered in a single night. He tragically lost his wife and child in a fatal accident, a moment that tore through the fabric of his existence. From that day on, he lived in fear, burdened by riches that no longer held any value. The wealth he once treasured now brought only sorrow, as he was haunted by the fear that those around him might go to any lengths to take it from him. Every day, he wept, gripped by a terror of losing what little remained of his life, like a man clutching at shadows, unable to hold onto the fleeting remnants of his happiness.
My mother taught me that the true tragedy in life is not just the loss of loved ones, but the emptiness that follows when we are left without anyone to love, cherish, or trust. She reminded me that the real value of wealth lies not in the money we tirelessly chase, but in the family and relationships that bring warmth to our lives. Even vast riches bring nothing but fear and pain if we don’t have meaningful people to share them with.
We live in a generation where the true meaning of wealth has been tainted, where the abundance of love and memories has been overshadowed by the pursuit of temporary joys. We lose people along the way, failing to realize their worth, blinded by the things we chase that ultimately hold no power.
And in this world of pain, sorrow, and hate, I cannot be more grateful for the life I have been blessed with — the people who have stayed through my life’s decisions, the paths that I have taken, and most importantly, the gift of love that has never wavered. I am grateful for the strength to be a brave woman who, despite life’s many trials, never loses hope or the power to love and nurture the relationships that give my life meaning.
This, I call success. This, I call victory. For it takes a hero to love, but it takes a true legend to sustain that love through all of life’s trials.

Some choose the hardest path in life, believing it will lead them to their true purpose. But some are thrust into loneliness, forced to walk a solitary road. It takes real strength to fight past this path, to resist the urge to let go of those we love in exchange for an easier journey. It is harder to swim through the challenges of life while burdened with love, but it is this burden that makes us truly rich.
I carry love in my endlessly hopeful heart — love for life, for my loved ones, and for myself. I fight to build something meaningful for those I cherish, for every bond I forge is family. I am proudest of myself for being able to face life’s greatest struggles for those I love. Because love, true love, is unbreakable.
This, I call happiness — cherishing the memories and people we are blessed with, striving to succeed with an abundance of responsibilities, and fighting to be better, not just for our loved ones, but with them, to build a life rich in the quiet wealth of happiness.
Embracing what we have.
